Maybeline Does Matte Lips

A little while ago I started a series testing the various different matte lip products high street brands have to offer. I've already tested all of Loreal and Rimmel and today is the turn of Maybelline. It's safe to say that Maybelline is one of my favourite brands for lip products so the most of these products already get a thumbs up from me.

For a long while Maybelline didn't have any matte lip products to their name. They offered long lasting sheen finish products and your standard gloss finish products but nothing that was remotely matte.
And then they released the Color Drama Intense Velvet Lip Pencils. At a quick glance these look very similar to the NARS Velvet Lip Pencils but at a fraction of the price. Having never tried a NARS pencil I can't say if they are similar but the asthetics of these pencils is very close. These pencils come in a range of shades from nude browns to dark reds and bright oranges. As they're a pencil they're very easy to apply and can be used as an alternative to liner if your chosen lip product isn't sticking well. They do like shiny on the lips to begin with but after a few seconds they dry down to a velvet, comfortable matte finish. The pencils can be drying on the lips but more often than not they're very comfortable to wear for long periods of time. They haven't had a shade update in a while but personally I don't think these will be going anywhere soon.

Then Maybelline upped their matte lip game when they released six totally matte but creamy lipsticks shades. I only have one of these lipsticks as there's always been another product to try and I just haven't gotten round to buying more of these. These are definitely Maybelline's winner when it comes to matte lips. Creamy, highly pigmented and opaque in one swipe these have that real pop about them when they're on the lips. They do transfer and there is a need to reapply after a while but when they feel as nice on the lips as they do, it's something you can definitely forgive. Simplistic in packaging and shade range these lipsticks appeal to everyone and if they don't then they soon will. There is going to be more shades released at the end of the month including a stunning deep blue toned red that could rival MAC's Russian Red and Urban Decay's Bad Blood.

And the final and most recent matte lip product that Maybelline have to offer is actually a disappointment. Purely because they're not actually matte. The Vivid Matte Liquid Lipsticks were released earlier this year and a lot of people, myself included hoped that these would be a inexpensive option for a liquid lipstick. Yet these are nowhere near matte. Patchy and hard to apply these do not dry down in the slightest. They stay almost sticky feeling on the lips which means they still slide around the lips and transfer easily. Yet people are still being sucked in because they see the word matte on the tube but they're not worth wasting nearly £7. If you're looking for a decent matte finish liquid lipstick then look at other brands. NYX, MUA and Bourjois offer better versions of matte finish products with better shade ranges as well.

Overall Maybelline do well when it comes to matte lip products. The Color Drama pencils live up to their name and are a brilliant high street dupe. The Creamy Matte Lipsticks are in a league of their own and some of the new shades will definitely knock other matte lipsticks out of the park. Keep your eye open for those new shades, there will surely be one screaming your name. It's a shame the Vivid Matte Liquid Lipsticks don't live up to there name. They had the potential to be great but because of a lacking formula they fall flat and only a complete redesign would put these up there with the other budget liquid lipsticks on the market. So far Maybelline is one of the better brands for matte lip products and they don't break the bank. If you're in need of matte lips definitely make Maybelline the first stand you check out.

Have any of you tried Maybelline Matte Lipsticks? What did you think? Do you have any brand recommendations for me?
